Are You Sabotaging Your Own Adwords Campaign?

Wednesday Jul 16, 2008

Alright… so a couple days ago I decided to try promoting a new product as an affiliate. And I decided "hey, why don’t I run some Adwords campaigns for it.” So I did.

Ok, so along with the Adwords thing going I tried SEOing (I really hate that term by the way but I use it anyway. Go figure) a few pages.

Finished that up and then let it brew for a day. I went in like usual to my Cpanel stats and was pretty happy with the results so far.

And yeah I did of course type my target keywords into Google a few times a few different ways to see how I was ranking.

Ok so here’s the thought I had about this stuff.

I noticed my Adwords stats had a lot of impressions but no clicks. YES, YES, YES. I know.

I probably created some not so good ads and needed to test. Of course that’s always true. Heck, a 1 day slapped together ad isn’t going to give any real results. I know this.

But it got me thinking about something…

So forget about what I should or shouldn’t do with Adwords. That has nothing to do with it. I just wanted to include that thought here cause’ that was when the thought hit me.

“I wonder how many other people are typing their targeted keywords into Google just like me?”

You know…

To see if their pages and stuff are showing up in Google’s search rankings yet.

Then I put 2 and 2 together.

AH-HA!

I bet you anything my Adwords campaign is all jacked right now because a  bunch of other people are checking their keywords like me. Like I said, to see if they are ranking organically and at what position.

I am sure this wouldn’t be as big of an issue with bigger competition keywords. You know,  targeting keywords in Adwords that have a TON of competition. BUT, I bet with smaller keywords that don’t have much it is.

I’m not really saying this is an “issue” in that sense. I just was makin’ a mental note of, “hey bro, you and some other people who are promoting the same product and are trying to rank some stuff organically are jacking each other’s CTR up for this little time period if you keep checking your keyword ranking with a Google search.”

No biggie.

But I think it’s kinda funny.

I bet there are 1 or 2 people out there that started an Adwords campaign pushing the same product and checked their stats after a short time and thought, “what the hell! Why do I have so many impressions and no clicks? I must have a bad ad? Or need to make some changes I think.”  And did.

Problem!

Your stats may have been jacked because people like myself and others where typing our targeted keywords in without even thinking about the fact that we were hurting ourselves and other’s CTR in Adwords.

DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What did I learn?

A: When promoting a product with Adwords that only a few 150+ other people are, DON’T check your organic keyword rankings via a normal Google search. Because you are jacking your own CTR and other people’s.

B: Remember this happens. And to know that this is why you always TEST things. Because you could delete what could have been a great performing Adwords campaign for no reason at all.

Google Changes

Wednesday Jul 16, 2008

I always get a kick out of Big G and the backwardsness that sometimes seems to happen with the big fellow.

The one thing you will notice with organic search rankings, especially new ones, is how quickly they will change. One day Google has a your site current and the next day they seem to have gone back in time a few weeks and lost it all.

NO WORRIES!

Hell, even with older established sites it still happens. I’ve seen a site go from solid #2 and #3 rankings for almost a 1 1/2 years to somewhere in the hundreds all of a sudden one day. But sooner than later Google has it back to good. And rankings return to normal.

That’s is why it is always a good idea to NEVER only rely on organic traffic. Think of it as a bonus and you will do just fine!

When you get it good! And when you don’t? You are still good!
